I managed to succeed in some aspects of cooking. I used a new toaster oven given to us. I cooked fish fingers and beef patties in it.
My first attempt at using it affected the texture of the fish fingers. Then I read the manual that it's better to pre-heat it before cooking the food in it. That altered the second batch of fish fingers in a positive way. I realised though that healthy food doesn't always taste good. This brand of fish fingers is low in cholesterol and fat. However it doesn't taste good. Perhaps frying it would make it nicer but it is an unhealthy method of cooking.
My beef patties had a more delicious fate. They tasted good. Mmm. I learnt from Oliver's Twist cooking show that you can crush nuts by putting them in a bag and hitting the bag hard on the kitchen counter. So I hit the bag of patties to loosen them since they were frozen and thus stuck to the plastic sheet. Ta-da! However this brand I bought has a strong taste of beef. Oh well.
The good thing about these two foods cooked in the oven is that I didn't burn them. Yippee! Hehe.
I also learnt how to cook fried rice. I used salmon and corn kernel as my ingredients. Following another guy friend's instructions (I feel so ashamed!) , I cooked up a pretty tasty version. I fried garlic in oil before adding the ingredients and then the rice. I seasoned it with dark and light soya sauces.
Oh, sad to say, I didn't know how to use a can opener before. I had problems opening a can because it was tedious doing so. I was afraid of the new one I have at home but after some experimenting, I managed to start opening. However, what gives me a sense of achievement is that it was a smooth process, not like with the previous can opener. :)
On another note, my parents are coming back the day after tomorrow. I'm beginning to feel tired of cooking, contrary to what I felt earlier but it lets me understand how my dad feels having to think of how to settle our meals. So it's a blessing in disguise! :)
I'm forced to finish food that I have at home. This saves me money too. I eat more fruits too. I also eat light and frequent meals. This is good for my health. :) Sometimes I can just eat fruits or bread for a meal. I also eat beef patties and fish fingers for meals as well. Or worse still, Diet Coke fills me up because it is gassy. Haha.
